5 Steps for a Fresh Start
Have you been feeling stuck? You're not alone, friend.
There's something about this time between winter and spring that often feels like being stuck, and yet there’s this twinge of hope and refreshment just around the corner. (Maybe that's how plants feel as they're waiting to bloom each year?)
Maybe, like me, you think you should be out there doing something new or pursuing some new challenge, but… you just don't know how to start.
I get that. The hardest part of doing something is often the start.
So, how do you move past not knowing where to begin and get to actually starting?
By taking small steps!
Here are five small steps to consider as you pursue a fresh start:
1. Write it out!
Even if you aren't someone who normally writes down your thoughts, this can be one of the biggest helps to navigate what you're thinking or feeling. Consider these questions:
How are you feeling right now?
Why might you be feeling that way?
What is one small step you can take toward clarity or change today?
2. Pray about it.
You might have the tendency to quickly tell your friends about your questions or problems. It’s not a bad thing to seek the counsel of caring people! But, I know I often bypass talking to God about things, and head straight to talking to other people or going ahead with my own ideas. Spend time talking to and listening to Him first.
3. Process it with someone else.
As the saying goes, we get by with a little help from our friends. After you've spent time processing your thoughts alone and in prayer, it might benefit you to take your thoughts to a friend or mentor. If there's a new project or idea you want to pursue, they might provide a fresh perspective and the encouragement you need!
4. Take some time away.
Sometimes what we need most is to step away from our daily routines in order to find clarity. Whether it's an afternoon at a new coffee shop or park, a day away, or a weekend or weeklong retreat, a fresh place can bring fresh perspective. (Looking for a one-day or weekend retreat? 5. Make a plan!
Now that you’ve had time to process why you’ve felt stuck and think about how to move forward, let’s make a plan! Your plan doesn’t have to be extensive or detailed—just work out some simple next steps to take.
For example, let’s say your fresh start involves spending more time with God each day. Maybe your first step is setting a one-minute timer to pray first thing when you wake up. Your second step could be increasing the time by 30-seconds each week.
You don't have to keep feeling stuck or stagnant. The small steps we talked about today are still steps. You can have a fresh start, pursue that new project, and make positive changes in your life—one small step at a time!
